Luke Shaw has laughed off comparisons to Roberto Carlos, after England team-mates gave him the nickname ‘Shawberto Carlos’ after their quarter-final victory over Ukraine.

The Manchester United full-back has produced three assists in the last two games and has been one of England’s best performers so far at Euro 2020.

After his two assists against Ukraine, England team-mates including Harry Maguire and Harry Kane gave him the nick-name ‘Shawberto Carlos’ for his exceptional crossing ability.

When asked by the BBC about the comparisons, Shaw said: ‘It’s just a bit of banter and you have to laugh it off to be honest.

‘People have been saying it a lot and he actually followed me and commented on my picture after the game, so I don’t know if he watched the game but he’s probably been taking notice of what people are saying on Twitter and following and commenting on my picture which was very nice to be honest.’

Shaw’s performances for England follow off an exceptional year for Manchester United in which he was voted the club’s player of the season.

On the back of his form for club and country, Shaw has been described as one of the best left-backs in the world.

Shaw said: I don’t really think about them sort of things, the main priority is what the team needs and how I can help the team.

‘The last month or so I’ve loved every minute of it and you can see how much I’ve been smiling here. I’m really loving it and I don’t want to go home yet I want to go the whole way.’

Shaw has formed a formidable partnership with Raheem Sterling down the left-flank for England.

Despite coming from rival clubs across the same city, the two have enjoyed playing together.

A lot of England’s good play this tournament have come down the left-hand side of the pitch

The Manchester United full-back said: ‘Before this tournament I hadn’t played much with Raz and now it feels like I have been playing with him for so long, it’s so easy.

‘We understand each other’s movements and of course it shows that it can be a massive rivalry outside of here at our clubs, but here it’s like a big family.’

BBC pundit Alan Shearer said that part of the reason Sterling won’t be dropped for other attacking talents, is the connection he has with Shaw.

The former England captain said: ‘It’s a phenomenal relationship, the understanding that they have.

‘There’s been a clamour to start other players in that position but because of the relationship of those two is why Sterling won’t be dropped.

‘They have an understanding, Sterling knows where Shaw is going to be and what time to pass it. Sterling doesn’t have to look he knows Shaw will be on his bike. Shaw is having an incredible tournament as is Raheem Sterling.’
