The Chargers went 7-9 last season and have their quarterback of the future in reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Justin Hebert as well as stars like Joey Bosa and Derwin James on defense. They will spend the preseason trying to hone the backups and rookies under new coach Brandon Staley, who led the Rams’ top-ranked defense last season. The 49ers are looking for a solution at quarterback, with Jimmy Garoppolo facing competition from rookie Trey Lance after the team followed an NFC championship season with a 6-10 mark in 2020.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET in Inglewood, Calif. San Francisco is listed as a 5.5-point favorite in the latest 49ers vs. Chargers odds from Caesars Sportsbook, while the over-under for total points scored is 34. Before making any Chargers vs. 49ers picks, be sure to see the NFL predictions and betting advice from SportsLine’s Tom Fornelli.
The CBS national writer went a profitable 31-22 last season on his NFL best bets. What’s more, he has demonstrated a particularly sharp eye for the 49ers. In fact, Fornelli has gone a stunning 14-6 on NFL picks involving San Francisco. Anyone who has followed him is way up.

Why the 49ers can cover
The quarterback competition will benefit the Niners, with two quality signal-callers trying to put up performances the coaches will remember. Garoppolo played in only six games last season, winning three of them and throwing seven touchdowns against five interceptions.
Lance won all 17 games he started for the Bison, but the FCS competition didn’t prepare him for the NFL. He has the talent and arm strength and will be eager to prove he is acclimating quickly.
San Francisco put up 175 yards on the ground a week ago, and several talented running backs will get plenty of chances to prove they deserve playing time. JaMycal Hasty was the top dog in the 19-16 loss to the Chiefs in the opener, rushing for 63 yards on 10 carries, while Wayne Gallman and Trey Sermon combined for 47. Receivers Nsimba Webster and Jajuan Jennings also got in on the action, adding 53 yards on three carries. Receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who has been the star in camp after posting 748 yards as a rookie in 2020, also should get time to shine this week.
There are two reasons that I like the Chargers with the points in this one. Last week, Lance was sacked a whopping 4 times. The 49ers’ offensive line has struggled and the Chargers’ defensive line is not the unit you want to be lined up against when you are trying to figure things out.
Secondly, the 49ers have an incredibly young secondary. Even if Herbert doesn’t play, Stick went 7/7 and looked confident in the pocket. Similarly, Daniel, who has been one of the more reliable backup QBs in the NFL, also looked solid going 15/24 for over 100 yards. The combination of the two — with the possibility of Herbert — is enough for me to take the points at more than a field goal. I also think there is value on the moneyline (+190).
49ers vs. Chargers series history
The 49ers vs. Chargers series has not been around for very long. The two teams have met each other 15 times (including Super Bowl XXIX), with the Chargers winning eight games and the 49ers winning seven. The 49ers had won six straight meetings between the two, but the Chargers have responded with five consecutive wins.
