Carson Wentz spent three days attending Zoom meetings and rehabbing his injured left foot at home.
The Detroit Lions quarterback also used the time to think about how to avoid another trip to the reserve/COVID-19 list.
On Thursday, Wentz returned to practice still unvaccinated but with a stronger commitment to the league’s safety protocols after he and two other starters were activated.vbfbvfbf
“I’ve weighed a lot of things, I’ve factored in everything,” he said. “I know what’s at stake, I know all of those things and like I said, it’s just where I’m at, where I’m at with my family. That’s why just understanding the protocol to truly try everything we can to avoid what happened this week, it is what it is. The protocols are in place. So we’ve got to honor them as best we can so we can avoid what happened.”
The Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers released their final injury reports for the Week 1 matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium.
While the Colts had a few designations on their report to end the week, the Seahawks are seemingly fully healthy going into the regular-season opener. They didn’t have one injury designation on their report.
The two players that are listed as questionable for the Colts are expected to play, barring a setback, after practicing in full on Friday.
Here’s a look at all the players in the Week 1 matchup with an injury designation: The San Francisco 49ers visit the Detroit Lions tomorrow in their first game of the 2021 NFL season. Both teams made the playoffs last year, so this should make for some quality competition to get the season started.
Here are four key matchups we will be watching Sunday afternoon. The most-important individual matchup in this one won’t take place on the field but rather on the sidelines. Seattle’s new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron will be unveiling his scheme against one of the league’s most-potent defensive units.
Last season, Indianapolis ranked in the top 10 in fewest points and yards allowed. They were particularly stout against the run, only giving up 90.5 rushing yards per game. Waldron should embrace a pass-heavy attack and incorporate the quick strike game that’s been mostly missing from Russell Wilson’s repertoire to date.
The Colts defense has a lot of studs. Up front, their most disruptive defender is DeForest Buckner, formerly of the 49ers. Buckner has given Seattle’s offensive line problems in the past, posting five sacks and 14 quarterback hits in eight career meetings. Guards Damien Lewis and Gabe Jackson should be able to hold their own, but containing Buckner could be tough for new starting center Kyle Fuller, who has had some issues in pass protection.
Fantasy football players will like the matchup Seattle’s top-two wide receivers have to open the season. The Colts will be playing without their No. 1 cornerback – veteran Xavier Rhodes – who’s been ruled out due to a calf injury. That means D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Locektt will be facing the duo of Rock Ya-Sin and T.J. Carrie. Look for Russell Wilson to take advantage and target those two often.
The Seahawks travel to Indianapolis to face the Colts in Week 1 of the NFL season, a fixture that figures to be an interesting schematic battle on both sides of the football—so much so that the game placed in my “top five Xs and Os matchups” article back in May.
To gain a better idea of what the Colts will bring to the spectacle, I enlisted the help of Zach Hicks, lead analyst at Horseshoe Huddle/SI Colts. Think of this as an expert scouting report on Seattle’s first enemy.
“A really good club,” Seattle head coach Pete Carroll assessed of Indianapolis on September 8. “A really good club; a really well-oiled machine. All of their phases are good, so it’s a championship matchup for us. We gotta play championship football.”
Yeah they’re pretty good,” assessed the defensive coordinator. ”I mean, any time you look at backs you want to see how fast they are and their guys are really fast. So they have that special unique ability about them…it will be a challenge for us to really hold them tight.
We won’t spend much time on this because everybody’s probably tired of hearing about it. The Colts haven’t won a season opener since 2013 and can tie the franchise record for opening-day futility – eight straight losses from 1984-91 – with Seahawks in town. Too much can be made of what will be the first step into the NFL’s first 17-game season, but Jim Irsay hasn’t hidden his desire for Indy to finally get its act together in week 1.
